Empowering the Next Generation of Screenwriters
In an ambitious effort to empower emerging screenwriters, Creative Careers South Africa, in collaboration with the National Film and Video Foundation and the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, proudly launches the “Am I the Writer?” Screenwriting Skills Programme. As part of the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme, this initiative is set to revolutionize the creative landscape, nurturing the talents of 50 promising young individuals in the film and television sector.
“Am I the Writer?” offers a dynamic, four-week online mentorship beginning on 20 November and concluding on 14 December 2023. Designed as an intensive writing workshop, the program connects aspiring screenwriters with experienced professionals in the industry. Participants will engage in a rigorous curriculum, focusing on the development of screenwriting skills, understanding narrative structure, character creation, and the nuances of dialogue and storytelling.
Recognizing the abundance of talent in the South African cultural and creative industries and the need for more accessible skills development, this program aims to bridge the gap. Busi Tshabalala, Arts Project Coordinator at Creative Careers South Africa, notes, “This initiative is not just about skill enhancement; it’s also a vital opportunity for network building and professional growth.”
We invite applications from enthusiastic screenwriters aged between 18 and 35, who hold a post-Matric qualification. Applicants must have a stable internet connection and access to a laptop or desktop computer. To apply, submit a one-page synopsis based on the writing prompts provided and, if applicable, a portfolio showcasing your work. The application portal remains open until 15 November at 3 PM. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
In our commitment to supporting emerging talent, successful candidates will receive a stipend of R5000, emphasizing our dedication to nurturing your screenwriting journey.
Arthur Zitha, Project Manager at Creative Careers South Africa, emphasizes the program’s unique nature: “For those serious about screenwriting, ‘Am I the Writer?’ offers an unparalleled combination of essential writing techniques and expert guidance.”
Under the directorship of Stallone Santino, the programme envisions a future where South African stories continue to enthrall audiences globally. “Screenwriting is the cornerstone of captivating film and television. Through this program, we are investing in a future rich with diverse and compelling narratives,” says Santino.
